Touching the Summit: Breaking barriers and redefining the journey

Me at Everest Base Camp trek in May 2023

About me

Hi, my name is Caroline and I am on a mission to become the first DeafBlind person to summit Mt. Everest.

I have Usher syndrome, a condition that affects both my hearing and vision. My sight began deteriorating at 19, and I want to take on this challenge while I still have some usable vision - creating a lasting memory to hold onto if and when I lose it completely.

But this expedition is about more than just reaching the summit. It’s about breaking stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding of blindness and deafblindness. Along the way, I aim to document my journey and those who make it possible, from my team and the deafblind community to the many individuals who support me - highlighting the power of resilience, adaptability, and human connection.

What’s next?

I will be undertaking various challenges as part of my training for the Everest summit. My plan includes completing races such as an ultra marathon as part of endurance training and engaging in different expeditions to gradually build up my high altitude.
